The Island


Curaçao is a tropical island, located in the southern part of the Caribbean. It forms together with Bonaire and Aruba the Low wind Islands, also called the ABC Islands.

Curaçao is the largest of these three islands. Curaçao consists of the island of Curaçao and the island Klein Curaçao, wich is 10 kilometers from the East Coast. The highest point is the Sint christoffelberg with 375 m. The island consists of coral and volcanic rock.

THE CLIMATE


The annual average temperature is 31.2°c during the day and 25.6°c at night. The coldest month is January with an average temperature of 26.5°c and the warmest month is September with an average temperature of 28.9°c. Most rain falls between October and January, the rain season. The temperatures are relatively constant with minor differences throughout the year. The hurricanes season runs from June through November, but tropical storms or hurricanes rarely reach Curaçao.

Willemstad


On both sides of St. Anna Bay, the two districts of Willemstad are located, in the East the oldest part: Punda, The point, with many shops and in the West the Otrobanda district, Papiamento for the other side. Both parts are connected by a wooden pontoon bridge, the Queen Emmabridge since 1888.

Curaçao has a lot to offer besides the beautiful beaches and the azure blue sea. For example, visit the Christoffel park, the beautiful and colorful Quay in Willemstad with colonial mansions. Between Piscadera and West point you will find the beautiful bays of Curaçao.

At De ruyterkade you can find a lively ' floating market ' where mostly Venezuelans from their boats offer merchandise to customers on. There are six natural harbors that have arisen because the sea has eroded the coral lime. On the southwest side you can find the largest harbor, the Schottegat, the port of Willemstad.

Monuments


Downtown Willemstad, originally a European colonial city, has many monuments and also outside the city center, scattered around the island you can find important monuments. For this reason, the Government has established a monument policy in the monument plan in 1990.

In December 1997, parts of historic Willemstad placed on the World Heritage list of UNESCO (World Heritage List). A global recognition for the special value of the city. Historic Willemstad was placed on the World Heritage list because of the large cultural and historical value which is unique in the Caribbean and beyond. A large part of the original urban structure and architecture is still present, which, however, is strongly influenced by the wide variety of other population groups.

Curaçao has up to now about more than 860 protected monuments and historical and archaeological sites. The 4 historical districts of the town known as Punda (17th century), (18th century) Otrobanda, pietermaai and Scharloo (both 19th century) and more than 80 country property's, dating from the 17th to the 19th century, which very often you can find in a beautiful natural setting. Average is 1 estate on every six square kilometers of the island, this is unique to the Caribbean and beyond. Along with the many colorful traditional rural houses scattered around the island, the plantations also called landhuizen are a distinctive image on the cultural landscape of Curaçao.
